Programmed by Alix Blevins
The Eye Must Be Sun is a sound and language performance emerging from poet Anne Lesley Selcer and artist Chris Duncan’s mutual obsession with the transformative power of the sun, specifically the way it enables and controls appearance. This new collaboration is occasioned by the recent release of Selcer’s book of poetry Sun Cycle.
An overriding theme in Oakland-based artist Chris Duncan’s current work is the use of natural forces, such as the sun and the moon, as conceptual and compositional prompts for both sonic and visual efforts. He employs repetition and accumulation as a basis for experiments in visual and sound media.
Anne Lesley Selcer is the author of Sun Cycle, a poetry book about the image, and Blank Sign Book, a collection of essays on art. Her gallery publications and chapbooks include A Book of Poems on Beauty, Banlieusard, and Untitled (a treatise on form). Her writing can be found in art and literary magazines, gallery and museum exhibition catalogs, and several anthologies. Occasionally she creates off the page.
